Patriotism is in the air, with flags, songs, and more. If you’re looking to try something that isn’t just hanging out in a mall (no judgement here), here are some activities that just might break the mould.

This weekend, five comedians from varying backgrounds gather to share what makes Malaysians unique. Expect to hear stories of our public transportation, mamak hangouts, and mall culture.
2. Honouring Malaysian Women: Pesta Puan-tastic | 14-15 Aug | GMBB | 9am-6pm | Free public event
Women’s struggles are intrinsically tied with colonialism. Pesta Puan-tastic is a festival highlighting the role and contributions of women in the country’s fight for independence until present-day Malaysia. Some highlights include an art exhibition by activist Yati Kaprawi, a poetry slam, a speech contest, and an open mic session. There will also be discussion sessions and TED talks.
3. Shop Lokal: Pesta Muda Mudi | 14-16 Aug | Central Market | 10am-10pm | Free public event
Pesta Muda Mudi has it all for the young crowd: local fashion and accessory brands to browse, hands-on arts and crafts workshops, live performances, and even a stamp rally.
4. Kee Thuan Chye’s Once Upon A Malaysian Dream | 13 – 16 Aug | Dewan Sivik MBPJ | 8.00pm, 3.00pm | Ticketed event
Kee Thuan Chye returns for a satirical take on Malaysian socio-political environment. Played by a cast of twelve in 200 roles between them, this is one you would not want to miss out on.
5. Nine Arts Festival | 14 – 16 Aug | Negeri Sembilan | All-day | Ticketed event
Celebrate the Malaysian arts scene with the nine arts festival. Participants can watch and partake in local art, such as Wayang Kulit, the Navasara dance, and more.
6. Turn Up & Sing: Kau Ilhamku | 16 Aug | Sultan Abdul Samad Building | 4pm | Ticketed event
Of course, Merdeka isn’t complete without singing local songs at the top of your lungs. The Sound Collective is organising a Merdeka sing-along at Sultan Abdul Samad Building featuring the timeless “Kau Ilhamku” by Man Bai. Singing at the historic building adds a layer of significance, seeing how the building overlooks Dataran Merdeka, the very place where independence was declared on 31 August 1957. All you need is your best batik outfit, and The Sound Collective will provide the rest.
7. Get Creative: Heritage Weekend | 15 Aug | Taman Tugu | 9am-11am | Free entry
Malaysian food and crafts await families this weekend. Kids can get creative with batik colouring and Peranakan tile painting, with each workshop priced at RM15 per pax. The proceeds go to the Amanah Warisan Negara (AWAN) Trust Fund to support park conservation and maintenance. Meanwhile, adults can catch a live cooking session with Chef Dato’ Ismail, learning the secrets behind classic Malaysian dishes.
8. A Chef’s Confession | 15 Jul – 15 Aug | Garden@Heeren, Malacca | 1.00 pm, 7.00 pm | Ticketed event
Murder mysteries now have a Malaysian twist. Enjoy delicious Peranakan cuisine of fried popiah, pongteh chicken, and cincalok omelette, followed by solving a murder case alongside a myriad of characters. Peranakan outfits are definitely recommended.
9. Colours of Us | 3 Aug-20 Sep | KLGCC Mall | All-day | Free entry
