The arts in Malaysia, despite culturally rich, has recently been unstable though the push for STEM, the rise of AI, or some not viewing the arts as a lucrative business. The Nine Arts Festival then hopes to change those perspectives.
Aptly held in Negeri Sembilan from the 14th to the 16th of August, the festival brings together music, theatre, painting, sculpture, dance, cinema, literature, comics, and architecture, akin to the Nine Muses of Greek Myth — honouring each tradition while championing cross-disciplinary collaboration for a new era of creativity.
Rooted in local heritage and global perspective, Nine Arts Festival builds enduring cultural connections that enrich society and ignite creative futures. Their core values include creativity by honouring tradition while encouraging bold experimentation, cultural exchange by building bridges between Malaysia and the world through the arts, inclusivity by welcoming all voices to co-create a shared cultural experience, innovation through collaboration by connecting disciplines, communities, and generations, education by nurturing emerging talent through workshops, dialogue, and mentorship, and sustainability & impact by elevating the arts as a pillar of regional identity and prosperity.
The 2026 festival theme, Origins, celebrates heritage as a source of inspiration and an anchor for creativity. Through performances, exhibitions, workshops, and community engagement, the festival brings together artists, audiences, and disciplines to imagine and create the future.
Such performances include the Navarasa, an evening of dining, dance and music set against the ancient granite hills of Negeri Sembilan for the opening act. The dancers move according to the nine different stages of human emotion, from Love to Compassion/Sorrow, Anger to Fear, before concluding with Peace. Additionally, there’s a Wayang performance alongside a fast-paced, Guess Who?-style interactive quiz where performance, music and theatre collide in The Big Stage Quiz.
If creating is more your speed, the festival hosts three different workshops: Shadow Puppet Making, where you can create your very own shadow puppet, Art Together, where the little ones can paint alongside professional artist-mentors from Persatuan Seni Negeri Sembilan, capturing the iconic architecture and landscapes surrounding Seremban Lake Gardens, and Create Your Own Soundtrack, where participants can choose from a wide range of instruments to create a live soundtrack to a short Charlie Chaplin film clip.
