Bintulu is set to become the world’s first location for the development of light-based chips designed to generate power for satellites under a collaboration between Sarawak and South Korea.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Bintulu would serve as the testing site for the high-technology project, which is targeted for completion within three years.
He said the technology involves satellite chip components that use sunlight to generate energy, with about 500 local engineers expected to take part directly in its development and testing.
The project is part of Sarawak’s broader efforts to strengthen its capabilities in high technology and research and development while expanding its green and low-carbon industrial ecosystem.
Abang Johari said the initiative would also bring together clean energy, semiconductor technology and space applications, reflecting the state’s focus on emerging technologies.
With the project centred in Bintulu, the city is expected to further strengthen its position as a high-value industrial hub. The initiative also aligns with Bintulu’s recognition by the World Economic Forum as a Low-Carbon New Industry Cluster.
