Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) has suspended with immediate effect an employee following allegations of sexual misconduct involving at least eight students at one of its MARA educational institutions
MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the suspension was necessary to allow a comprehensive investigation to be conducted without interference from those involved.
He said the allegations came to light after several students contacted him directly, claiming they had been victims of the alleged misconduct.
Following the complaints, Asyraf Wajdi said he immediately instructed MARA management to take action.
“I persuaded them to also lodge police reports because this involves a criminal offence. I am surprised that the students were more willing to complain directly to me than to the management,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Asyraf Wajdi said MARA would adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards sexual misconduct and would not compromise on any form of inappropriate behaviour.
He also assured students that allegations of misconduct would not be concealed or ignored to protect the institution’s reputation.
“Do not be afraid to report any misconduct, especially sexual harassment. MARA will never compromise on inappropriate behaviour and will take firm action, including dismissing those involved,” he said.
The chairman urged students and other members of MARA institutions to come forward and report any misconduct so that appropriate action could be taken.
The alleged misconduct remains subject to investigation, and the suspension does not constitute a finding of guilt against the employee.
