More than 75% of the recommendations from the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the management and operations of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) between 2014 and 2020 have been implemented as of early August 2026, with work on the remaining recommendations ongoing.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the progress should be viewed as part of broader efforts to strengthen governance, accountability and confidence in national institutions.
He said the government respected the ongoing investigation process and that any action arising from it should be carried out in accordance with the law and left to the relevant authorities.
From an economic perspective, Akmal said stronger governance at TH was important given its role in managing the trust of more than 9.8 million depositors and its position as a significant institutional investor in the domestic economy.
Akmal said, “With investments exceeding RM96 billion, Tabung Haji’s governance has wider implications for confidence in institutions and the domestic market. The priority is to ensure that investment management, financial discipline and risk management continue to be strengthened so that the interests of depositors can be protected sustainably.”
He said institutional strengthening was particularly important as Malaysia’s economy maintained strong growth momentum, expanding 6% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026 and 5.7% in the first half of the year, compared with 4.5% in the same period last year.
Akmal said strong economic momentum needed to be supported by well-functioning institutions, policy certainty and consistent reforms to sustain business and investor confidence and strengthen the country’s economic resilience.
The efforts are aligned with the current government’s framework and the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), 2026-2030, which places emphasis on economic growth, living standards and good governance.
The Economy Ministry will continue focusing on 13MP implementation, including raising productivity and competitiveness, accelerating quality investments and creating higher-value jobs so that economic growth translates into higher incomes and improved living standards.
