Disney+ Is Turning A Viral Webtoon Into Its Next K-Drama

A Korean webtoon with almost three billion views is heading to Disney+ this November, with The Remarried Empress set to bring its royal power struggles and complicated marriage to the screen.

The 10-part series stars Shin Mina as Empress Navier and Ju Jihoon as Emperor Sovieshu. Their marriage takes a turn when Sovieshu falls for Rashta, a runaway slave who enters the royal court.

As the relationship develops, Navier faces a new threat to her position as empress. Lee Seyoung plays Rashta, while Lee Jongsuk joins the cast as a crown prince who becomes involved in Navier’s story.

For fans of Korean dramas, the cast is likely to be one of the series’ biggest draws. Shin Mina is known for Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, while Ju Jihoon has appeared in Kingdom and Light Shop. Lee Jongsuk’s credits include Big Mouth and Romance Is a Bonus Book, while Lee Seyoung starred in The Red Sleeve.

The series is adapted from the Naver Webtoon of the same name, which has reportedly amassed almost three billion views. Cho Suwon, whose previous work includes Pinocchio and Still 17, directs the series. Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choongyeol handle the television adaptation.

Before its streaming debut, The Remarried Empress will have its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival, running from Oct 6 to 15. According to Deadline, the festival will screen its first three episodes in the On Screen section.

Disney+ will release the first four episodes on Nov 4. New episodes will follow every Wednesday, with the final episode arriving on Nov 25.

With a large webtoon readership, a recognisable Korean cast and a weekly Disney+ release, The Remarried Empress is shaping up to be a Korean drama adaptation to watch later this year.
