With regards Selangor State Government announcement of Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as an occasional public holiday to celebrate the state contingent’s overall championship at SUKMA, the Human Resources Ministry has issued an advisory for employers.
Following the announcement, the Ministry of Human Resources clarified the employment compliance guidelines for private sector employers operating within the state.
The occasional public holiday was declared in accordance with Subsection 9(1) of the Holidays Act 1951 [Act 369], which empowers state authorities to designate specific days as public holidays for their respective states.
The ministry highlighted that the occasion is classified as an optional public holiday for private sector employers, meaning participation is not compulsory.
Any private sector employer in Selangor that chooses to observe the special holiday must grant a paid public holiday to their employees on September 1, 2026.
Employers who opt to observe the holiday may, with employee consent, substitute September 1 with an alternative working day as a paid holiday, pursuant to Section 60D(1A) of the Employment Act 1955.
