Malaysia and Turkiye have moved to deepen their defence partnership through the inaugural Malaysia-Turkiye Policy Talk, held at Turkiye’s Ministry of National Defence headquarters in Ankara on Monday.
The meeting brought together officials from both sides to exchange views on defence policy and strategy, geopolitical security issues and regional developments, while exploring ways to strengthen cooperation networks.
The Malaysian delegation was led by Defence Ministry deputy secretary-general of policy Datuk Yani Daud, while the Turkish side was chaired by Ministry of National Defence director-general of defence and security Lt Gen Ilkay Altindag.
Both sides also discussed the importance of maintaining regional peace and stability, with Malaysia expressing appreciation for Turkiye’s role in promoting peace in West Asia through the recent signing of the Makkah Pact, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said.
A key outcome was an agreement to establish Terms of Reference for the Policy Talk, creating a formal mechanism for both countries to discuss cooperation instruments and potential future defence programmes.
“As a follow-up, Malaysia formally invited Turkiye to attend the second Policy Talk, to be held in Kuala Lumpur next year,” MINDEF said.
The ministry said the Kuala Lumpur session is expected to further strengthen the strategic partnership and longstanding friendship between both countries, in line with priorities under the Mid-Term Review of the Defence White Paper.
