Dan Stevens is stepping into the role of Alex Murphy for Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming RoboCop series, taking over the character made famous by Peter Weller in the 1987 film.
The eight-episode series follows a fallen police officer whose consciousness is implanted into a powerful robot after a technology company convinces a city to add the machine to its police force. Stevens will play both Murphy and his cyborg alter ego, according to Variety.
The project has been in development since Amazon acquired MGM in 2022. Peter Ocko serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer, with James Wan, Michael Clear and Rob Hackett also executive producing through Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
The original film’s co-creators and co-writers, Michael Miner and Ed Neumeier, are also attached as executive producers.
Stevens became widely known as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey before taking on roles in Legion, Zero Day and Beauty and the Beast. His recent film credits include Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Cuckoo. He is also set to appear in the second season of Dexter: Resurrection.
The RoboCop franchise began with Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film, followed by two sequels and a 2014 reboot starring Joel Kinnaman. The character has also appeared in several animated and live-action television adaptations, as well as video games and comics.
At this time, Prime Video has not yet announced a release date for the new series.
