TCL has taken Samsung to court in the US, accusing the South Korean electronics giant of falsely advertising some of its televisions as using Mini LED technology.
The Chinese consumer electronics company filed the lawsuit in a Los Angeles federal court on Monday, targeting Samsung’s M Model televisions which TCL claims do not contain the technology associated with Mini LED displays.
TCL said Samsung launched the M Model range in March at prices below its cheapest Mini LED televisions while advertising the sets as featuring the technology.
According to the lawsuit, the M Model televisions “contain none of the technological advancements associated with Mini LED technology” and were instead recycled from Samsung’s standard LED television line.
Samsung said it intends to vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit and stands “fully behind the quality and accuracy of our product descriptions.”
TCL attorney R.C. Harlan said Samsung’s advertising misled consumers who were looking for the higher picture quality associated with Mini LED televisions.
“Samsung’s false advertising misled consumers who wanted the higher picture quality associated with Mini LED televisions into buying Samsung’s falsely labeled product, unfairly damaging TCL’s sales, goodwill, and valuable technology in the process,” Harlan said.
TCL said Mini LED technology delivers “substantially better picture with greater dynamic range and higher contrast ratios.” It also claimed it overtook Samsung in US Mini LED television sales between 2023 and 2025 after Samsung failed to develop Mini LED televisions at a competitive price.
TCL accused Samsung of using a standard LED product and presenting it to consumers as a higher-end Mini LED model.
“Samsung took a cheap, non-Mini LED model from a recycled product line and peddled it to the public as a ‘supreme’ Mini LED model at an attractive price point,” TCL said.
The company added, “This age-old tale of corporate greed proved successful, as Samsung’s sham products stole back TCL’s hard-won market share.”
TCL is seeking a court order preventing Samsung from marketing the disputed televisions as using Mini LED technology, along with an unspecified amount of monetary damages.
