The race for the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) presidency is set to be a two-horse contest after Dato’ Ab Ghani Hassan and Dato’ Sri Shahril Mokhtar were confirmed as candidates for the post.
The two names were among the candidates officially announced by FAM today for the election of its Executive Committee for the remainder of the 2025-2029 term.
The election will take place during the second FAM Extraordinary Congress of 2026 on 17 September.
For the vice-presidential posts, Datuk Seri Haji Rosmadi Ismail, Mohd Firdaus Mohamed and Syed Yazid Syed Omar will contest for the Vice-President 1 position, while Datuk Saaran Nadarajah and Afizal Abu Othman will compete for Vice-President 3.
A total of seven candidates are vying for three Executive Committee positions representing state football associations, the Royal Malaysia Police Football Association, Armed Forces Football Association, Malaysian Malay Football Association, Malaysian Indian Sports Council and Malaysian Chinese Football Association.
Five candidates will contest two Executive Committee positions representing MFL clubs, AFL, the women’s national league and Malaysian Premier Futsal League.
The professional category, which has one position, will see Dato’ Zainal Abidin Hassan go up against Azlan Johar, while Dato’ Suraya Yaacob and Dr Siti Faidul Maisarah Abdullah will contest the women’s Executive Committee position.
FAM said all nominations had undergone a review and verification process based on its statutes as well as the rules and procedures governing the election.
The announcement was issued by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Abdullah Mohamad Said, chairman of the FAM Election Committee.
