Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said calls for an earlier general election will be considered, while stressing that the government’s immediate focus remains on economic recovery, public well-being and tackling corruption.
Anwar said the federal government remains stable and has the mandate to continue governing and managing the country effectively.
“I have personally faced pressure and various suggestions, but I have made my decision. As I told the Cabinet on Wednesday, we have a mandate to govern the country well and to eradicate corruption and abuse of power,” he told reporters after Friday prayers at Masjid Bukit Indah in Ampang Jaya today.
He said the government would continue prioritising efforts to revive the economy, improve the people’s well-being and strengthen efforts against corruption and abuse of power.
Anwar also stressed that the anti-corruption drive was not based on race or intended to protect the position of any particular group.
“Whether they are Malay, Chinese or Indian, or from Sabah or Sarawak, this is not a matter of race. It is about saving the country, not protecting positions or any particular group.
“Despite the risks and pressure I face, Insya-Allah, I ask the people to pray that we can continue our efforts to clean up the country,” he said.
