Indonesia’s state-owned airport operator, recorded 764 scheduled flights affected at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, following the temporary closure of its airspace due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.
Assistant Deputy for Communication & Legal Affairs at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Yudistiawan, stated that the affected movements comprised domestic, international, and cargo operations.
“The 764 affected flights represent an accumulation of cancellations, delays, and diversions to alternate airports—and related operational adjustments,” Yudistiawan said in a statement on Sunday.
The disruptions impacted 570 domestic passenger flights, 185 international passenger flights, and nine cargo flights.
The temporary suspension of flight operations at Indonesia’s main international gateway was extended until 5:30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on Sunday, following a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by air navigation provider AirNav Indonesia regarding the spread of volcanic ash.
Yudistiawan emphasised that the temporary aerodrome closure was implemented as a precautionary measure to guarantee aviation safety, as volcanic ash poses severe technical risks to aircraft engines.
To handle thousands of affected travelers across its terminals, airport management has activated the Service Recovery Action (SRA) protocol and established an operational command post at Terminal 1B to streamline coordination with airlines and ground handlers.
Airport authorities advised all prospective passengers to confirm their flight status through official airline channels prior to traveling to the airport or contact the InJourney Airports Contact Center at 172.
