A Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah was diverted to Chennai, India on Monday after the aircraft developed a technical issue involving its second engine.
Flight MH156, carrying 186 passengers, landed safely at Chennai International Airport after the pilot alerted air traffic control and requested an emergency landing. Airport authorities subsequently declared a full emergency and activated the necessary response teams as a precaution.
The aircraft, an Airbus A330-200, landed at around 4.44pm local time and was moved to a parking bay for further assessment. No injuries were reported among those on board.
An airport spokesperson said the issue involved Engine No. 2, with the airline and relevant technical teams now assessing the aircraft and the fault.
“Further assessment of the aircraft and the technical issue is being carried out by the airline and relevant technical teams,” the spokesperson said, adding that airport operations remained normal.
The aircraft had departed Kuala Lumpur at about 3.30pm before the crew detected the suspected engine problem and sought permission to divert to Chennai.
Passengers were accommodated at the airport following the diversion, with the aircraft expected to remain on the ground while engineers investigate and address the technical issue.
The incident came as another international flight was also diverted to Chennai on Monday following a separate technical issue, although both aircraft landed safely and normal airport operations continued.
