Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh has fuelled speculation that the state assembly could be dissolved soon after hinting that only “two Fridays” remain before the process takes place.
Speaking during the Jelajah Ketua Menteri Sayang Rakyat programme at Sungai Udang, Ab Rauf said the timeframe had been shortened from his earlier estimate.
“I said the other day four Fridays left, but now there are only two Fridays left,” he said during a morning tea and engagement session with residents of Kampung Bertam Ulu on Monday.
The remarks come after Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called for the dissolution of the Melaka state assembly to be expedited, saying voters should be given the opportunity to determine the state’s future through the upcoming state election.
Ab Rauf, who is also Melaka Umno liaison committee chairman, meanwhile confirmed that discussions had been held with several political coalitions on possible cooperation ahead of the election.
He said any decision on political cooperation would be based on the party’s political interests rather than personal relationships.
“They come asking when we will join. For the sake of the struggle, I will not make decisions based on friendship, but based on politics for the sake of the struggle to defend and rebuild a party that has been trampled on and insulted all this while,” he said.
Ab Rauf also likened Melaka to a “beautiful maiden” attracting interest from various parties seeking political cooperation ahead of the state election.
His latest remarks have further strengthened speculation that Melaka could be among the first states to hold a state election, with the timing of the DUN dissolution now appearing increasingly imminent.
