Malaysia is exploring the possible acquisition of India’s BrahMos air-to-ground missile system, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirming that discussions are underway but no decision has been made.
Anwar said the matter was raised during his bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with further discussions to be handled by the relevant agencies, including the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
Speaking to India’s NDTV, Anwar said initial discussions had already taken place and that he supported continued engagement on the potential acquisition.
“Those who have the expertise in the air force should continue the discussions,” he said, adding that Malaysia’s ties with India were built on trust and could be strengthened across various areas.
While the government is considering the system, Anwar stressed that the final decision would rest with the relevant defence authorities.
He also acknowledged India’s defence capabilities as discussions on the potential procurement continue.
The BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile powered by a ramjet engine. It can be launched from submarines, ships, fighter aircraft and mobile land-based launchers.
The system was jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya through BrahMos Aerospace.
