Chinese President Xi Jinping will undertake a three-day state visit to the United States from Sept 23 to 25 at the invitation of US President Donald Trump, according to an announcement by China’s foreign ministry carried by Chinese state media on Monday.
The visit will bring the leaders of the world’s two largest economies together for high-level discussions amid continuing efforts to manage bilateral trade relations and broader strategic differences between Beijing and Washington.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Xi and Trump would hold extensive discussions on bilateral relations and international issues, with Beijing seeking to strengthen dialogue, manage differences and expand cooperation between the two countries.
The visit follows Trump’s state visit to Beijing in May and marks the second summit between the two leaders this year. China described the reciprocal visits within six months as a significant development in bilateral relations.
The two leaders are expected to hold their main talks in Washington on Thursday, Sept 24, with trade tariffs, artificial intelligence, rare earth supplies and technology restrictions among the issues likely to feature in their discussions.
The meeting comes as Washington and Beijing seek to manage their trade relationship ahead of the November expiry of their existing tariff truce and suspension of certain Chinese rare earth export restrictions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng have also been engaged in negotiations ahead of the summit, with discussions covering tariff reductions, trade arrangements and technology-related concerns.
