Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said he has yet to receive any no-confidence motion ahead of the next parliamentary sitting, despite calls for any party seeking to remove UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) from the Unity Government to formally test its support in Parliament.
“Not even one (motion of no confidence) has been received. I have not heard anything about it,” he told reporters after officiating the ‘Negara Bangsa: Membina Jati Diri dan Identiti Nasional’ dialogue in Bangi today.
His remarks came after UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi challenged parties seeking to remove UMNO and BN from the Unity Government to table a no-confidence motion in the Dewan Rakyat.
Johari also said he had not received the proposed Bills on the separation of the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, as well as legislation to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure.
“I was informed that there were plans for them, but I have yet to receive the papers. Usually, two weeks before the tabling, the Speaker will be informed. But so far, I have not received anything,” he said.
Earlier, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the Bill to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure was ready to be tabled during the upcoming parliamentary session.
The Third Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament is scheduled to run for 37 days from Oct 5 to Dec 8, according to the Dewan Rakyat calendar. Budget 2027 is scheduled to be tabled on Oct 9.
The next sitting will therefore be closely watched for any formal motion involving confidence in the Unity Government, as well as the proposed institutional reform Bills.
