OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT Ads to Malaysia and six other markets across Asia, with the advertising service now available in more than 60 countries.
The rollout covers Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, following earlier launches in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and India.
Ads will be shown only to users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions will remain ad-free.
OpenAI said advertisers can access ChatGPT Ads through its Ads Solutions team, agency partners and technology partners, while eligible businesses can also use its self-service Ads Manager platform.
The company said ChatGPT Ads are designed to reach users while they are exploring products and services, such as when planning a trip, choosing software or looking for products for their homes.
“We’re at the beginning of a new chapter for advertising, with AI creating new ways for businesses and people to connect. Our expansion into more markets across Asia brings that opportunity to businesses of every size, from global brands looking for new ways to grow to entrepreneurs and startups running their first campaign,” said Dave Dugan, Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions at OpenAI.
Shopee is among the companies working with OpenAI on the expansion.
“OpenAI is a valued strategic partner for Shopee as we explore how AI can enhance the e-commerce experience for buyers while supporting sellers in growing their businesses. Across our markets, we are expanding access to AI-powered tools that help buyers discover what they need and enable sellers to reach and serve customers more effectively. Following the launch of ChatGPT Ads in Brazil, we are pleased to extend this collaboration to Southeast Asia and Taiwan, marking another step in our deepening partnership with OpenAI,” said Peggy Zhu, Executive Director of Brand and Growth Marketing at Shopee.
OpenAI said ads will be clearly labelled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s answers. It also said conversations remain private from advertisers and customer data will not be sold to advertisers.
The company added that advertising does not influence the answers provided by ChatGPT, while users can control ad personalisation.
OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads had reached a US$1 billion annualised revenue run rate at the end of August, less than 200 days after its launch.
Tens of thousands of advertisers are now running campaigns on ChatGPT, with OpenAI planning to expand into more markets and introduce new advertising formats, optimisation tools and measurement solutions in the coming months.
