Tokyo Stocks Ended Mixed After 5-Day Break

Tokyo stocks ended mixed Thursday, with buying of artificial intelligence-related shares boosting the market while rising bond yields weighed on the broader index.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 495.04 points, or 0.76 percent, from Friday at 65,513.99.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, fell 15.84 points, or 0.39 percent, to 4,075.30.

Japanese financial markets were closed from Monday to Wednesday for public holidays.

Stocks opened higher as investors caught up with gains in AI-related shares posted during Japan’s market break.

However, the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond yield spiked to 3.075 percent at one stage, its highest level since August 1996, putting pressure on issues that had recently performed strongly.

Analysts also said the market lacks a fresh catalyst to push beyond the level reached earlier this month.
