Jon Watts is set to direct a new Star Wars movie currently in development, adding another feature project to the franchise’s long list of directors.
Watts is best known for directing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, starting with Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, followed by Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019 and Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. His earlier credits include Cop Car and Clown.
Watts already has a connection to the Star Wars universe. He co-created Star Wars: Skeleton Crew with Christopher Ford in 2024. Set during the New Republic era, the Disney+ series followed four young characters on an adventure across the galaxy, with Jude Law among the cast.
Variety reported that Simon Kinberg is writing the script for Watts’ new film. Kinberg has worked as a writer, producer and director on the X-Men franchise.
Watts’ involvement also continues his relationship with Disney. In 2024, his production company, Freshman Year, and producer Dianne McGunigle signed a first-look feature deal with Walt Disney Studios.
The new film joins a growing list of Star Wars projects in development. Watts now becomes one of the franchise’s theatrical directors, following filmmakers including George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand, J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson.
The most recent Star Wars movie to reach theatres was Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. No release date or further details about Watts’ film have been announced.
