Penang Free School (PFS), Southeast Asia’s oldest English-medium school, today begins its 210th anniversary celebrations, marking more than two centuries of educational heritage while laying the foundation for its next chapter as a future-ready institution.
Held under the spirit of “Fortis Atque Fidelis” – Strong and Faithful, the three-day celebration from Oct 1 to 3 brings together generations of Old Frees, students, educators, industry partners and members of the wider community.
More significantly, the anniversary serves as a platform to mobilise support for the Penang Free School Digital Transformation Fund, a strategic initiative designed to accelerate the school’s readiness for a rapidly evolving education, technology and economic landscape.
Organising chairman Ivan Ooi Jieun Vei said the decision to mark the 210th anniversary, only a decade after the school’s bicentenary, reflected the importance of preparing PFS and its students for the future.
“This is not simply a celebration of 210 years of history. It is a call to action for the entire Penang Free School fraternity to come together and invest in the school’s future.
“We want to harness the strength of our alumni, educators, industry and community to ensure that our students are equipped not only to excel academically, but to thrive as future professionals, innovators and leaders,” he said.
The Digital Transformation Fund provides a platform to translate the strategic aspirations of the National Education Blueprint 2026-2035 and the Penang STEM Talent Blueprint into tangible initiatives at school level.
Priority areas include strengthening digital infrastructure, advancing educator capabilities and expanding student exposure to STEM, artificial intelligence, robotics, coding and emerging digital technologies.
The initiative will also seek to establish stronger partnerships between PFS and industry, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, exposure and talent development while contributing to Penang’s future workforce pipeline.
The initiative is already delivering tangible results.
As of Sept 28, 13 units of 75-inch Hisense Smartboards have been purchased under the PFS Digital Transformation Initiative for use in the school.
The effort is ongoing, with the PFS community and its supporters working towards a target of 33 Smartboards across the school.
Ivan said the progress demonstrated how alumni and community support could translate into tangible improvements in the learning environment.
“The education ecosystem has changed fundamentally, with technological advancement creating new disciplines, industries and career pathways that were barely imaginable a generation ago.
“Artificial intelligence, data science, robotics and digital technology have opened an entirely new frontier of opportunity. Our responsibility is to ensure that PFS students are prepared to navigate that frontier with confidence, capability and character,” he said.
He stressed that the Digital Transformation Fund is intended to complement, rather than replace, government funding.
“Government funding sustains the school, while the Digital Transformation Fund accelerates its transformation.
“We are not raising funds simply to acquire technology. We are investing in capability, opportunity and ultimately in the talent pipeline that Penang’s future economy will depend upon,” he said.
The anniversary programme begins today with the 210th Speech Day, held at the school hall from 8am to noon, with Old Frees invited to attend.
On Oct 3, the Free School Reunites programme will bring together Old and current Frees, as well as former and current teachers and staff, for a series of sporting and community activities from 8am to 2pm.
The programme will also feature a guided Free School Guide walkabout of the historic school grounds and a pickleball rally competition at GOP, Jalan Burma.
The centrepiece of the celebrations will be the 210th Anniversary Dinner, taking place at Penang Free School from 6pm to 11.30pm on Oct 3.
The dinner will feature a special performance by Ella, Malaysia’s Queen of Rock, alongside performances by talented Penang Free School students, bringing together the school’s musical heritage and the talents of its current generation.
The organising committee welcomes Old Frees, members of the education and business communities, industry leaders and members of the public to participate in the celebrations and support the school’s continuing transformation.
With 13 Smartboards already secured towards the 33-unit target, the Digital Transformation Initiative remains an ongoing effort. The organising committee encourages Old Frees, alumni groups, parents, businesses, industry partners and members of the public who wish to support the initiative to come forward and help PFS equip its students and teachers for the future.
“Two hundred and ten years is an extraordinary legacy. Our task now is to ensure that this legacy remains relevant for generations to come.
“The best way to honour the past is to equip the next generation to shape the future,” Ivan said.
