First Solar And Battery-Assisted EV Charging Station On North-South Expressway

The first EV charging station that comes with its own battery energy storage system has been launched today (Oct 17) at Behrang (Northbound) Layby along the North-South Expressway.

The charging station has two Kempower DC chargers that can fast charge four vehicles (EV) simultaneously.

Works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the innovative fast-charging infrastructure adopts a modular and mobile concept.

“With the new station, EV users can charge their vehicles in a strategic location along the highway,” he said during the launching ceremony.

Nanta said the ministry, through the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) had approved a pilot project for the same model at four other locations along the North-South Expressway involving 16 charging points of direct current fast charger (DCFC).

Besides Behrang (Northbound), he said three other spots will be in operation in 2023 in Behrang (Southbound) as well as Senawang Layby (Northbound and Southbound).

“Each charging station will have the capacity of 300kWh to power the DC chargers with four charging points. This station is an addition to 22 DCFC EV charging stations already available along the expressway with 30 charging points.

Nanti added in 2024, three more locations has been proposed for Ajil (Northbound and Southbound), and Perasing Rest and Service Area (R&R) sites, all on Lebuhraya Pantai Timur 2 (LPT2) in Terengganu.

Meanwhile, Nanti said the ministry and LLM is ready to cooperate with industry players especially local and foreign charge point operators to encourage technological innovation, research and exploration in EV infrastructure and ecosystem, adding the this will also expand the talent infrastructure and competitiveness in the clean energy sector.
