CelcomDigi Signs MoU With MPAJ To Transform Hulu Kelang Into A Smart City

CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) and Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), involving a ten-year partnership, for the digital development of Hulu Kelang, to transform the district into a smart city.

In a statement today (Feb 6), CelcomDigi said through the partnership, both organisations will collaborate to explore and implement potential 5G technology solutions delivered on a solid fibre optics infrastructure with the ambition to build a smart city ecosytem.

“The smart city ecosystem aims to elevate the livelihoods of residents and accelerate the growth of businesses in Hulu Kelang,” it said.

The signing of MoU for the first-of-its-kind state government and private sector partnership to sandbox and implement smart city solutions in Selangor, was witnessed by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

CelcomDigi was represented by its chief executive officer Datuk Idham Nawawi while MPAJ chairman Dr Ani Ahmad signed on behalf of the municipal council.

In his speech, Amirudin expressed his delight to witness today’s MoU signing ceremony between MPAJ and CelcomDigi.

“The ceremony proves MPAJ’s determination to form a smart city, in line with the state government’s desire to transform Selangor into a Smart State by 2025.

“It is my utmost hope that the efforts to be implemented under the Smart City initiative will result in a positive impact on the ecosystem in an inclusive manner, not only to the society but also to the economy and the environment,” he said.

Commenting on the collaboration, CelcomDigi’s Idham said the partnership with MPAJ is a strategic alliance with a shared vision to build a feasible smart city infrastructure and ecosystem model.

“CelcomDigi and MPAJ are working closely to assess and identify the best smart city solutions that will transform Hulu Kelang into an integrated digital district, creating a modern and sustainable environment that both promotes economic growth and improves the welfare of its residents.

“We aim to leverage the best of local and global technology partnerships to develop this ecosystem, which hopefully can serve as a model to benefit other municipalities, with the net effect of having an interoperable network of smart city solutions in more areas across the country,” Idham added.

This collaboration is in support of MPAJ’s ‘Smart City Framework’, a visionary plan developed in January 2022 to transform Ampang Jaya into a smart city with a focus on Smart Infrastructure, Smart Economy, Smart Community, Smart Environment, and Smart Governance.

As the selected connectivity and digital solutions provider for the endeavour, CelcomDigi will oversee the coordination and implementation of the smart city-related solutions and technologies specifically in Hulu Kelang district, the pilot project area for the development of Ampang Jaya Smart City.

As part of this collaboration, CelcomDigi said it will spearhead a sandbox that brings together an ecosystem of interested parties with smart city solutions.

“This include as innovators, entrepreneurs, startups, technology providers and device manufacturers, to test their products and services in a live environment, and potentially implement these solutions in the Hulu Kelang smart city initiative.

“As part of its smart city initiatives to-date, MPAJ has installed closed-circuit television (CCTV), wi-fi and smart junction solutions in several locations within MPAJ’s administrative area,” it added.
