CIMB Bank Bhd and CIMB Islamic Bank Bhd will be donating RM2 to the Gabungan Anak-Anak Palsi Serebrum (GAPS) for every new issuance of its new Visa debit card as a means from the financial institution to support children with cerebral palsy (CP).
The initiative, the first of its kind in Malaysia, not only strengthens the bank’s commitment to making a positive social impact by helping those children build their confidence and independence, but it also raises awareness of this disability.
“CP is more than a medical condition, it is a lived reality for many children and their families who support them.
“At the same time, there are challenges that extend beyond the child’s diagnosis and these children can face significant hurdles in gaining access to therapy, education and social inclusion.
“Hence, we had set out with an intention to make a difference to raise awareness for this cause in a meaningful way which is why we will be donating RM2 to GAPS for every Visa debit card we issue because we are hoping that through the contribution, GAPS can operate sustainably and remain focused on providing essential help like rehabilitation equipment and enrichment programmes to the children in need through recurring contributions,” CIMB Group Consumer and Digital Banking Chief Executive Officer Effendy Shahul Hamid said.
The debit card was launched by Effendy together with the Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and witnessed by GAPS Founder and President Rafidah Rafizah Ahmad.
Effendy added that CIMB wishes to be a bank that drives financial growth and champions social causes.
“Hence, we are pleased to partner with GAPS to create a meaningful impact in the lives of children living with CP, channelling contribution towards essential rehabilitation equipment and enrichment programmes.
“This partnership reflects our belief that positive change begins at the community level. By fostering a culture of inclusivity, we aim to enhance the lives of individuals and strengthen the overall social fabric of our communities,” Effendy said.
He then highlighted that the newly launched debit card is also CIMB’s first debit card that incorporated recycled PVC made from post-industrial material, reflecting its steps toward more sustainable material choices in product design.
At the event, Effendy on behalf of CIMB presented rehabilitation equipment to GAPS, reinforcing the bank’s commitment towards uplifting the cerebral palsy community.
Meanwhile, Rafidah said the support by CIMB will significantly ease the challenges of families caring for individuals with CP.
“With the right resources and support, these children can thrive in their areas of interest and lead fulfilling lives, achieving their real potential,” Rafidah said.
On the other hand, Effendy revealed to the media that currently there isn’t any plan to allocate any additional funding to assist GAPS.
“However, we are open to work with our partners to find out what other optimum funding they require and we are ready to provide that funding if needed,” Effendy said, adding that there is also a possibility for a similar initiative to be extended to other NGOs.
