Ministry Urges Caution Amid Unpredictable Weather Conditions

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability has issued a warning for the public to stay vigilant as unpredictable weather conditions continue to affect Malaysia.

Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad advised that the country is likely to experience hot and dry weather as the Northeast Monsoon nears its final phase, expected to end by mid-May.

He highlighted the risks of heat-related illnesses such as fever, flu, cough, and even hypothermia, especially among children, as body temperature regulation becomes more difficult during extreme weather conditions.

“Records from 2023 and the previous year showed an alarming number of heat-related illnesses, including fatalities from heatstroke. Additionally, we are still witnessing floods due to unpredictable weather patterns. While the current hot spell hasn’t reached critical levels, we must remain cautious,” he said during a press conference after the launch of Agrobank’s first green branch in Bagan Serai.

Agrobank president and CEO Datuk Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin was also present at the event.

Nik Nazmi also emphasised the ministry’s support for green technology initiatives and urged more financial institutions to adopt such practices to drive sustainable development while reducing environmental harm.

“We applaud Agrobank for incorporating green technology at their Bagan Serai branch, such as using solar energy and roof structures to reduce environmental impact and curb pollution. We hope more parties will engage in green initiatives, aligning with Malaysia’s MADANI aspirations,” he added.
