PT Resources Holdings Bhd (PTRB) has established a RM17 million coconut processing facility in Fuqing City, Fujian Province, China, as the group’s pioneering efforts in tapping into the growing demand for plant-based, dairy-alternative food products.
Located within the China-Indonesia Food Industrial Park, a special economic zone dedicated to food innovation, logistics and smart manufacturing, the plant positions PTRB as the first wholly foreign-owned enterprise to set up coconut processing operations within the park and in China.
Equipped with advanced processing capabilities, the new facility will produce a wide range of value-added coconut products, including frozen coconut water, frozen coconut milk, desiccated coconut and other derivatives.
Trial production is currently underway, with commercial operations expected by mid-June 2025.
“We are optimistic about the growing demand for coconut-based products in China, supported by a population of 1.4 billion, rising interest in plant-based diets and increasing demand for dairy alternatives.
“The popularity of coconut milk in coffee chains and coconut yogurt in retail channels like Tmall, ALDI and BHG reflects a strong consumer shift,” PTRB Managing Director Heng Chang Hooi said in a statement.
Heng shared that in the initial phase, the facility will serve business-to-business customers, primarily food and beverage manufacturers in Fujian and nearby regions.
“Fujian is one of China’s key import hubs for mature coconuts and provides logistical access to a 700km network of manufacturers, boosting PTRB’s regional supply chain efficiency,” Heng said, adding that PTRB is also exploring private-label and original equipment manufacturer opportunities with Chinese distributors and manufacturers, aligning with its localisation and export strategy.
Heng said the group aims to participate in upcoming trade exhibitions, including the China Food and Drinks Fair, to broaden its market reach.
On the supply side, Heng revealed that PTRB is finalising sourcing arrangements with Indonesian coconut producers, ensuring a stable supply of raw materials to meet anticipated demand. Indonesia is among the world’s leading coconut producers, providing a reliable and strategic supply base.
