Selangor Breaks Economic Record With RM432.1 Billion GDP In 2024

Selangor has once again proven its status as Malaysia’s undisputed economic leader, recording a historic GDP of RM432.1 billion in 2024, the highest ever achieved by any state and a significant leap from RM406.1 billion in 2023.

This marks the second consecutive year the state has surpassed the RM400 billion threshold, reaffirming its position as the country’s top contributor to national output. The state now accounts for 26.2% of Malaysia’s total GDP, up from 25.9% the previous year.

With a year-on-year (YoY) GDP growth rate of 6.3%, well above the national average of 5.1%, Selangor continues to demonstrate strong economic fundamentals, robust investor confidence and the effectiveness of its strategic development policies.

“Our continued progress is a reflection of the collective commitment and hard work of all stakeholders, from the public and private sectors to civil society and the rakyat.

“Together, we’ve built a thriving ecosystem that not only attracts investment but also creates quality jobs and uplifts communities,” Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said.

He shared that the services sector remains the largest driver of Selangor’s economy, contributing RM263.9 billion or 61.1% of the state’s GDP, an increase of 6.3% YoY.

“This growth was supported by key subsectors such as wholesale and retail trade, food and beverage services, transportation, finance, real estate, and information and communications,” he said, while noting that the manufacturing sector, which accounted for 29.1% of GDP, grows by 5.1% and driven by high-value industries including electrical and electronics, food processing, beverages and transport equipment.

“Selangor contributed 32.9% to Malaysia’s total manufacturing output, cementing its role as the country’s top industrial hub,” Amirudin said.

Meanwhile, Invest Selangor Bhd Chief Executive Officer Datuk Hasan Azhari Idris said Selangor’s impressive GDP performance is the result of long-term planning and targeted initiatives to attract quality investments across high-growth industries focusing on facilitating sustainable, innovation-driven investment while enhancing Selangor’s global competitiveness.

On the other hand, looking to sustain its growth trajectory, Selangor will be organising the  Selangor International Business Summit from Oct 8 to 11, 2025, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

“The summit is expected to draw regional and global investors, further boosting business interaction and high-impact partnerships,” Amirudin said.

He stressed that with a diverse economic base, future-ready infrastructure and a highly skilled workforce, Selangor is charting a forward-looking and inclusive path, one that continues to strengthen its role as the driving force of Malaysia’s economy and a top-tier destination for trade and investment in Southeast Asia.
