Malaysia is positioning framework, infrastructure and education as the core pillars to building digital trust, as the country accelerates its digital transformation agenda.
Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo said the effort requires a comprehensive and coordinated approach, underscoring the urgency of regional collaboration at the ASEAN 5G & Operational Technology (5GOT) Security Summit 2025.
“Over the next three days, we aim to define actionable approaches to implement digital trust across the region’s digital services. We seek to establish shared frameworks and guidelines for 5G and Operational Technology security within ASEAN,” said Gobind.
The summit, which convenes 32 experts from 14 countries, aims to foster innovation through public-private partnerships and raise awareness on the importance of cybersecurity. Gobind said regional collaboration will be critical to protecting digital ecosystems.
He added that Malaysia recorded more than 6,000 cyber incidents in 2024, with financial losses exceeding RM1.22 billion. The majority of reported cases involved fraud, system intrusions and malicious code.
Highlighting that cybercrime is a global challenge causing trillions of dollars in losses annually, Gobind said Malaysia has made legislative and institutional progress to strengthen its cybersecurity resilience.
The Cyber Security Act 2024, which came into force on Aug 26 last year, gives the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) the authority to oversee compliance and coordinate national protection of Critical Information Infrastructures. A new Cybercrime Bill will be tabled in Parliament this October to replace outdated laws and bolster the country’s legal framework.
On the international front, Malaysia’s Cabinet has approved the country’s accession to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime. The government is also preparing to sign the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi this October.
“These actions reflect Malaysia’s commitment to international norms and collaborative efforts in addressing cybercrime,” Gobind said.
The ASEAN 5GOT Security Summit 2025 is jointly organised by Digital Nasional Bhd and CyberSecurity Malaysia, with support from both regional and global partners. The event features high-level conference tracks, cyber incident simulations, innovation pitching sessions and ASEAN’s first operational technology-focused cybersecurity exhibition.
