The National Art Gallery has opened the Archive Project: Chung Chen Sun exhibition, highlighting the life’s work of the late Chung Chen Sun, a leading Chinese ink painter and art educator in Malaysia.
Officiated by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, the exhibition presents rare oil and pastel works alongside his renowned Chinese ink paintings. Archival materials such as photographs, sketches, catalogues, and interviews provide insight into his creative process, artistic philosophy, and contributions as a founder of the Malaysian Institute of Art.
Structured around Confucian philosophy and the Sanjiao principles of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, the showcase is divided into six themes, covering his rise from national to international recognition, cultural exchanges between Malaysia and China, and his influence on art education.
A catalogue accompanying the exhibition documents his career and legacy, while a separate book, Chung Chen Sun: Seventy Years of Art, marks his 90th birth anniversary.
The exhibition runs until September 1 2025, at the National Art Gallery, with free admission.
