Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stepped up emergency coordination as severe flooding continues to affect Hat Yai and surrounding districts in southern Thailand, prompting thousands of Malaysians to leave the affected areas over the past 48 hours.
In a statement today, the Ministry said the Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla and the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok are closely monitoring the rapidly developing flood situation and working with Thai authorities and local partners to assist affected Malaysians.
According to figures provided by the Malaysian Immigration Department, more than 6,300 Malaysians have crossed the border out of Thailand and returned safely to Malaysia as of 24 November.
Most Malaysians caught in the flooding were staying at multi-storey hotels and have since been accounted for, the Ministry added.
The Consulate General in Songkhla has been on full alert since 22 November, with its operations team coordinating with Thai agencies and local volunteers to help Malaysians still facing difficulties on the ground.
Malaysians who have not yet registered or obtained assistance are strongly urged to contact the Consulate General in Songkhla or the Embassy in Bangkok immediately.
To ensure continuous support and improved coordination, Wisma Putra has activated its Operations Room in Putrajaya, effective today.
Malaysians in the affected areas who are unable to reach the diplomatic missions in Thailand are advised to contact the Ministry directly for assistance.
The Ministry said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
