Penang Welcomes a Striking New Art Space by the Sea

Penang’s cultural landscape gained a bold new landmark today as the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery officially opened at The Light Waterfront. After over two years of development since its construction agreement in September 2023, the eight-storey venue rises above the sea, dedicated to the ethos of “Art for Peace.”

Attended by Penang Chief Minister YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow and former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, the unveiling signals Penang’s rise as a hub for international arts.

Housing more than 1,000 works, with over 400 on display in rotation, the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery stretches across eight waterfront storeys. It includes permanent exhibition floors, a special exhibition hall, an art education centre, and spaces for international collaboration.

The sixth floor is reserved for global exhibitions, hosting leading artists and curated projects from around the world, all under the guiding theme of “Art for Peace”.

While Professor Lin Xiang Xiong’s work forms the core of the collection, the gallery is designed for exchange rather than retrospection. Its programme spans exhibitions, forums, and education initiatives that support ongoing international collaboration.

At the opening, Professor Lin was appointed to the Leaders for Peace Council, founded by former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. The role reflects the gallery’s wider focus on dialogue, peace education, and cultural exchange.

The launch exhibition, Picasso and Lin Xiang Xiong: A Dialogue Across Time, sets the tone. Placing Picasso’s modernist language alongside Lin’s Eastern perspectives, the show explores themes of anti-war, anti-poverty, and environmental awareness, offering a strong introduction to Penang’s newest cultural destination.

The same day hosted the Art for Peace International High-Level Art Forum, drawing leaders from UNESCO, France, Brazil, Japan, China and Malaysia.

Split into sessions on Governance & Peace and Arts & Peace, discussions tackled cultural soft power, artistic responsibility and cross-cultural engagement. Lin reinforced: art records truth, preserves conscience and bridges civilisations—a collective duty for the gallery.

Now in soft-opening phase, the gallery welcomes visitors Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays) with on-site tickets; online booking follows soon.
