Emma Stone Stars in Universal’s Rom-Com ‘The Catch’

Emily ‘Emma’ Stone is once again returning to the rom-com genre. The two-time Academy Award winning actress had her career beginnings with Easy ACrazy, Stupid, Love, Aloha, Magic in the Moonlight, before winning her first Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in La-La Land. As her career grew, she expanded into more experimental films, as shown with her frequent collaborations with acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos in the films The Favourite, Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and Bugonia.

Now, Stone and Chris Pine have closed deals to star in Universal Pictures’ romantic comedy The Catch, which will be released in theaters on May 21, 2027. When it comes to romantic comedies, Stone’s new co-star, Pine, has plenty of his own experience. He previously starred in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal EngagementJust My LuckBlind Dating, and This Means War. Directed by her husband Dave McCary and script written by Emmy winning couple Jen Statsky and Travis Helwig, sources say the rom com is described as Bull Durham meets Notting Hill with Stone playing the most hated woman in baseball.

Stone, McCary and Ali Herting will produce the film through Fruit Tree’s first look deal with Universal Pictures with Shawn Levy and Dan Levine will produce through 21 Laps, which is coming off the financial success of Backrooms. Michael H. Weber (500 Days of Summer) will also produce. Additional cast includes Saturday Night Live breakout star Ashley Padilla as Stone’s sister and comedian Druski will be joining.

Not much has been revealed about the project, but we know for sure that Stone will be bringing her comedy chops to the game, which will surely shine throughout the film.
