Tim Allen Says No to ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot

“Toy Story” star Tim Allen says that a “Home Improvement” reboot would be unlikely at the moment due to the “personality problems” between the three actors who played his on-screen sons in the 90’s ABC sitcom.

“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” Allen told US Weekly in an interview published Wednesday.

“Home Improvement,” which ran for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999, starred Allen as Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor. The show followed Tim’s career as a home improvement TV personality and his home life with wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) and their three sons: Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and Mark (Taran Noah Smith).

Bryan, the oldest son, has been arrested multiple times, the most recent being a second-degree domestic violence charge in 2025. In February 2021, he was charged with felony assault, third-degree robbery and assault in Oregon. He had been arrested for allegedly strangling his then-girlfriend, Johnny Faye Cartwright, in 2020.

Additionally, Jonathan Taylor Thomas is no longer “interested in acting,” and has not appeared on screen since a guest role on Allen’s sitcom “Last Man Standing” in 2015, and Smith is now working as a technical manager for the Community Submersibles Project, where he teaches people how to pilot submarines.

“They’ve got their own issues,” Allen told US Weekly. “I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.”
