Ghana left it late but ultimately found a breakthrough as Caleb Yirenkyi struck in stoppage time to secure a 1-0 victory over Panama in their Group L World Cup 2026 clash at Toronto Stadium.
The decisive moment came in the 95th minute when Yirenkyi tapped home his first international goal, ending a tense contest that had looked destined for a draw.
Both sides had chances in a competitive opening spell, with Panama creating the first real opportunity. Amir Murillo’s low cross found Cecilio Waterman in the box but Benjamin Asare reacted quickly to produce a fine diving save. Moments later, a loose punch from Asare dropped to Jiovany Ramos, though the defender could only fire over with time and space.
Ghana gradually grew into the match but continued to live dangerously at the back. Cristian Martinez went close after collecting a loose ball inside the area, shifting past his marker before sending his effort into the side netting.
Carlos Queiroz, who has now coached at a joint-record five successive World Cups, responded with changes just before the hour mark. One of those substitutes, Brandon Thomas-Asante, immediately added energy, bursting down the right and squaring for Jordan Ayew, only for Ramos to recover with a crucial intervention.
As the match wore on, both teams appeared increasingly content to settle for a point. That changed in stoppage time when Thomas-Asante was released down the left, driving into the box before laying it across goal for Yirenkyi to finish from close range and seal victory for the Black Stars.
The result denies Panama a first World Cup point while Ghana walk away with a vital early win in Group L.
Key stat: Queiroz has now coached at five consecutive World Cups, having previously led Portugal, Iran and now Ghana at the 2026 tournament, becoming only the second coach to achieve the feat after Bora Milutinovic.
Antoine Semenyo was named Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match.
