Pakatan Harapan (PH) has unveiled more candidates for the upcoming Johor state election, with DAP making a bold move by fielding 33-year-old Mohamad Syafwan Ani in the Malay-majority Bukit Permai state seat.
PH deputy chairman Anthony Loke said Syafwan’s candidacy reflects the party’s strategy to strengthen its appeal among Malay voters in the constituency.
He said Syafwan is no stranger to Bukit Permai, having served as special assistant to the Kulai MP and remained actively involved in grassroots work in the area over the years.
“DAP believes Syafwan’s experience and strong engagement at the grassroots level are key factors behind his selection,” Loke said.
The party has also retained incumbent Senai assemblyman Wong Bor Yang to defend the seat, citing his track record and close ties with the local community.
Loke said both candidates were selected based on their experience and long-standing service to residents.
“We need candidates who are not only known to the people but have also spent years on the ground understanding local needs,” he said.
DAP is targeting victories in all three state seats under the Kulai parliamentary constituency — Senai, Bukit Batu and Bukit Permai.
For the Johor election, DAP will field 17 candidates, comprising three Malays, two Indians and 12 Chinese candidates.
The lineup will also feature more women candidates as part of the party’s efforts to strengthen female representation in politics.
Loke said the remaining candidates will be announced by Prime Minister and PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim at the coalition’s official candidate announcement event at Bukit Gambir Extreme Park in Tangkak on Monday
