Bintulu Port Officially Transitions From Federal Port To State Port

Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad announced that a Tripartite Agreement has been signed between the Federal Government of Malaysia, the Sarawak Government and Bintulu Port Sdn. Bhd. (BPSB), marking a key milestone in the transition of Bintulu Port from a federal port to a state port under Sarawak’s jurisdiction.

The agreement was signed during a cheque handover ceremony held on June 21, 2026, following the change in status of Bintulu Port. The ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.

BPHB said the Tripartite Agreement serves to release and discharge the Federal Government from any claims and obligations by the Sarawak Government and BPSB that may have arisen from or in connection with the Privatisation Agreement dated December 31, 1992.

The Privatisation Agreement was entered into between the Federal Government, Bintulu Port Authority and BPSB.

Despite the transition, BPSB, a wholly owned subsidiary of BPHB, will continue to operate Bintulu Port after it becomes a state port, following the Sarawak Government’s decision to appoint BPSB as the approved port operator.

BPSB is expected to enter into a separate agreement with the relevant Sarawak state authority to operate, manage and develop Bintulu Port.

BPHB said the change in port status and the signing of the Tripartite Agreement will not affect the port’s day-to-day operations, customer services or the existing rights and obligations of BPSB under its operating arrangements.

The company added that there is not expected to be any material impact on BPHB’s earnings, net assets, share capital or the shareholdings of its substantial shareholders for the financial year ending December 31, 2026.
