Drivers who use diesel vehicles registered under someone else’s name can still qualify for the BUDI Diesel subsidy, provided they transfer the vehicle into their own name during a limited fee waiver period announced by the Ministry of Finance (MOF).
The ministry said motorists whose diesel vehicles are registered to individuals who are not immediate family members remain eligible to apply for the subsidy by completing an ownership change.
To encourage more applications, the government will waive the Vehicle Ownership Transfer (THM) fee for eligible diesel vehicles from 1 July to 30 September 2026, allowing drivers to update their registration without incurring the usual transfer charges.
The temporary exemption aims to help more Malaysians meet the ownership criteria under the BUDI Diesel programme, which forms part of the government’s targeted diesel subsidy initiative.
To qualify, applicants must be Malaysian citizens with a valid MyKad and driving licence, hold a valid motor vehicle licence, and have the diesel vehicle registered in their own name. Those currently driving vehicles registered to someone outside their immediate family will need to complete the ownership transfer before becoming eligible.
The Ministry of Finance is encouraging affected motorists to take advantage of the three-month fee waiver to regularise their vehicle ownership and access the subsidy.
