Malaysia Sets 30% Digital Economy GDP Target Under New MD2030 Blueprint

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today launched the Malaysia Digital 2030 (MD2030) blueprint, setting targets for the digital economy to contribute 30% of gross domestic product (GDP), create 500,000 high-value jobs and generate RM4.5 billion in public sector savings through digitalisation by 2030.

The 2026-2030 roadmap also aims to deliver 95% of government services online through end-to-end digital platforms, with the Digital Ministry appointed to spearhead the national strategy and drive Malaysia’s ambition of becoming an AI-powered nation by 2030.

According to the Digital Ministry, MD2030 will be implemented through seven strategic pillars covering government, economy, infrastructure, talent, society, trust and security, and innovation, with each led by a designated ministry to ensure coordinated implementation.

The government pillar will focus on strengthening public service delivery through the establishment of GovTech Malaysia.

Under the economic pillar, the blueprint aims to position Malaysia as a regional digital innovation and trade hub by promoting “Made by Malaysia” digital products, accelerating technology adoption in High Growth High Value (HGHV) sectors, and unlocking the value of data, digital assets and intellectual property.

The infrastructure pillar prioritises nationwide high-quality internet connectivity and the development of digital infrastructure, including data centres, cloud computing and smart cities.

Meanwhile, the talent pillar seeks to prepare Malaysia’s workforce for the digital economy through a comprehensive talent policy framework, workforce transition initiatives and efforts to strengthen the country’s position as a regional and global digital talent hub.

Each pillar will be led by a designated cluster head. Shamsul Azri will oversee the government pillar, while Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani will lead the economy pillar.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil will head infrastructure, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan will oversee talent, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri will lead society, Gobind will oversee trust and security, while Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Chang Lih Kang will head the innovation pillar.
