WhatsApp will soon allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of phone numbers, in a major privacy-focused update announced by Meta on Monday.
The feature is designed to reduce reliance on phone numbers and limit how personal details are shared, particularly when users are added to group chats or contact businesses for the first time.
“Restricting access to phone numbers would mean they are not shared automatically in cases such as being added to a large group chat or messaging a person or business for the first time,” WhatsApp said.
Under the new system, users will be able to choose unique handles that others can use to contact them, removing the need to expose their phone numbers in many interactions.
“There’s no directory to browse and no suggestions, so people need to know your exact username to contact you,” Meta said.
The company said the rollout of username reservations will take place gradually over the coming months, with users notified when the feature becomes available in their country.
As part of the update, creators, small businesses and organisations will also be able to secure usernames already used on other Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
With more than three billion users globally, WhatsApp said the change is aimed at strengthening privacy while maintaining secure and direct communication between users and businesses.
