The government will not disclose details of share purchase transactions or the holding periods of shares worth more than RM100,000 involving former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, saying the information is protected under the law.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the requested information forms part of investigation documents, personal information and asset declarations that are legally protected and are not public documents.
She said the issue involving Azam’s share ownership and asset declaration had already been examined by the Special Investigation Committee established on Feb 13.
“The committee completed its investigation independently, transparently and professionally, and its findings have been presented to the Cabinet,” she said in a written parliamentary reply.
She said the government has assured that all aspects of the case, including share ownership and compliance with applicable regulations, were thoroughly examined during the investigation, with appropriate action taken based on the committee’s findings.
“As such, if there are any developments or official decisions that should be made public, an announcement will be issued by the Office of the Chief Secretary to the Government, in line with the media statement released on March 31, 2026,” she said.
The issue resurfaced after Bloomberg reported that Azam, 62, held 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd, a Bursa Malaysia-listed financial services company, based on the company’s annual filing with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) on Feb 3 last year.
According to the report, Azam’s name appeared in Velocity Capital’s shareholder register maintained by SSM and accessible through a paid database.
Azam has since maintained that his RM800,000 shareholding in the financial services company was acquired transparently and in accordance with established procedures.
