The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has launched an investigation into an overseas luxury property estimated at US$13 million (about RM59 million), believed to be linked to proceeds from the alleged misappropriation of funds from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
According to the commission, the investigation began on June 15 to determine whether offences involving corruption, abuse of power and money laundering were committed under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
The probe is also focused on efforts to trace and recover the property, with MACC working with local and international enforcement agencies to establish its ownership and movement history.
MACC said the investigation remains at an early stage, with several key details, including the ownership of the property, still being established.
The commission added that any individual found to have a connection to the property or relevant information may be called to assist with the investigation.
The probe follows separate investigations by the police, which had received three reports relating to allegations involving the purchase or financing of a luxury property in New Jersey.
