MCMC Said It Received 29 Complaints During Johor Election Campaign

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) received 29 complaints throughout the Johor state election campaign period, with most involving the spread of false information, offensive content and online communications that breached existing laws.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the commission had been closely monitoring online platforms to ensure the election campaign remained orderly and that digital spaces were not abused to spread misinformation or content that could threaten public order.

She said MCMC worked closely with social media platform providers, relevant enforcement agencies and political stakeholders to address complaints promptly while ensuring that campaign activities complied with existing legal provisions.

According to Teo, the commission investigated each complaint based on the relevant provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with action taken where necessary.

The Johor state election has seen extensive use of digital platforms by political parties and candidates to engage voters, making online content monitoring an increasingly important component of election oversight.
