A strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Bismarck Sea off Papua New Guinea (PNG) at 4.53pm today, but no tsunami threat has been issued for Malaysia.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km, with its epicentre located at 3.3 degrees south latitude and 148.6 degrees east longitude, about 253km west of Kavieng, PNG.
MetMalaysia confirmed that the earthquake poses no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
