Sarawak’s public transportation landscape is set for a boost with the launch of Mutiara Borneo Sdn Bhd’s premium coach service, introducing a new standard for long-distance bus travel across the state.
The company began operations with a fleet of six brand-new double-deck coaches, connecting major Sarawak towns including Kuching, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri, as part of efforts to improve statewide connectivity and mobility.
Mutiara Borneo Managing Director Hamdin Morsidi said the service aims to address demand for safer, more comfortable and reliable long-distance transport in Sarawak, where geographical distances between major population centres present unique mobility challenges.
The 45-seat coaches feature a 2+1 seating configuration on the upper deck, ergonomic reclining seats and enhanced legroom, offering passengers a more comfortable travel experience for longer journeys.
Hamdin highlighted that the company plans to expand its network, including adding four single-deck coaches for the Kuching-Tebedu route with future connectivity to Pontianak, Indonesia.
“The company also aims to add six more double-deck coaches by the end of 2026 and explore a Miri-Limbang route via Brunei,” he said.
