RTS Ticket Pricing Mechanism In Final Stages

The fare for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link will be announced jointly by the transport ministries of Malaysia and Singapore in the near term, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said.

He said discussions on the fare had been progressing smoothly and positively, with RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO) now in the final stages of discussions with both governments to determine the fare and payment mechanism.

“This is a bilateral project. Therefore, any official announcement regarding key dates for operations and also the fare will be made jointly by the Transport Ministers of Malaysia and Singapore,” he told reporters during a progress and operational readiness inspection of the RTS Link project at Bukit Chagar station today.

Loke said RTSO was taking a balanced approach in determining the fare, taking into account passengers’ interests alongside the long-term sustainability of the service.

“RTSO also takes into account long-term operational sustainability as well as the value that will be enjoyed through a safe, fast, reliable and comfortable cross-border rail service,” he said.

Loke had previously said the fare was expected to be finalised in the third quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, he said he was satisfied with the physical progress of the RTS Link and its level of passenger comfort, adding that adequate signage would be provided to guide users through the various stages of the journey.

The RTS Link is scheduled to begin operations on Jan 1 next year and is expected to carry up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction. It will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru with Woodlands North in Singapore.
