Euro Zone Economic Sentiment To Strengthen Further

The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for the Euro Area rose further to 31.4 in August 2026, the highest in six months and beating market expectations of 25.4.

Euro area economic sentiment improved further in Aug-26. The ZEW Economic Sentiment Index rose to 31.4 (Jul-26: 23.4), marking the third consecutive monthly improvement and the strongest reading in 6 months. The latest reading exceeded market expectations of around 25–26 points, pointing to growing optimism over the economic outlook for the next 6 months.

The improvement was accompanied by a better assessment of current conditions. The Eurozone Current Situation Index jumped by -21.5 (Jul-26: -37.7), although the negative reading indicates that underlying conditions remain relatively weak. Meanwhile, Germany’s ZEW expectations index climbed to 34.2 (Jul-26: 26.3), supported by resilient exports, encouraging corporate earnings and infrastructure spending, despite lingering risks from elevated energy costs and geopolitical disruptions.

The latest readings signal improving prospects for the euro area economy, although the recovery remains at an early stage. MBSB Research opines that the improvement in expectations and current conditions suggests that economic momentum could gradually strengthen in the coming months, supported by better external demand and improving business confidence. Nevertheless, the still-negative reading for the current situation index highlights lingering weakness, while elevated energy prices and geopolitical uncertainties remain key downside risks to the recovery
