Facebook, TikTok Make Up 92% Of Scam Content Takedowns

Facebook and TikTok accounted for the bulk of scam-related content flagged for removal in Malaysia, with 127,568 pieces of content taken down or requested for removal as of Wednesday.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the figure represented 27% of the total content removal requests received, with Facebook accounting for 53% and TikTok 39%.

“And that figure can be broken down as follows: 53% is on the Facebook platform, 39% is on the TikTok platform, and the remainder is on other platforms,” he said at the Unity Government post-Cabinet press conference on Wednesday.

Fahmi, who is also the Unity Government spokesperson, said the content included false information such as claims about additional Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) payments that had not been announced by the Ministry of Finance.

He said fake accounts remained a major concern, particularly in facilitating scams as such accounts can be created easily and used to spread false information rapidly.

“So we see Facebook and TikTok are the two places where many, the most scams are detected. But this is only based on what has been reported,” Fahmi said.

He urged the public to verify information through platforms such as Sebenarnya.my and MyCheck, as well as through established mainstream media outlets.

The government has also gazetted two codes, the Child Protection Code (CPC) and Risk Mitigation Code (RMC), which social media platforms identified under the framework are required to comply with.

The platforms have been given several months to ensure the necessary measures are implemented in a coordinated manner to prevent harmful content that could threaten people’s property or lives.
