Resident Evil has made a strong start at the global box office, taking US$108.3 million in its opening weekend and setting a new record for the franchise.
The film earned US$60 million in North America and another US$48.3 million from international markets. That puts it ahead of Resident Evil: Retribution, which opened to US$70.6 million worldwide in 2012.
The opening weekend has also already surpassed the lifetime grosses of the original 2002 Resident Evil, which finished with US$102.9 million worldwide, and 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which made US$41.9 million.
Deadline reports that the new film is also director Zach Cregger’s biggest worldwide opening, beating Weapons‘ US$70 million debut last year.
Internationally, the UK was the top market with US$5.8 million, followed by Mexico at US$5.6 million. France and Australia each brought in US$2.6 million, while Germany made US$2.5 million.
Other markets included Spain with US$2.3 million, Brazil with US$2 million, Italy with US$1.7 million and Saudi Arabia with US$1.6 million. Malaysia contributed US$1.3 million.
The film still has several major markets to open. Thailand is scheduled for September 24, Japan for October 9, while China has yet to receive a release date.

Elsewhere, The Odyssey added US$21.3 million worldwide in its 10th weekend, taking its global total to US$1.72 billion.
Practical Magic 2 followed with US$19.1 million for the weekend and US$76.8 million worldwide. Spider-Man: Brand New Day added US$17.2 million, bringing its global total to US$2.478 billion.
Meanwhile, Coyote vs. Acme is nearing the US$100 million mark. The film has now made US$99 million worldwide, including US$54.7 million in North America and US$44.3 million internationally.
