The two east coast states most affected by flooding, Kelantan and Terengganu, will receive an additional and immediate allocation of RM25 million for each state, announced Prime Minister cum Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The additional fund will be channeled through the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department for repairing essential infrastructure such as roads and drainage systems, as well as raising road levels in Hulu Besut, Terengganu, added the Prime Minister.
Earlier, the federal government had allocated approximately RM50 million to assist flood victimes in Kelantan and Terengganu through funds from the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
The Prime Miniseter also announced an allocation of RM7.4 million to provide a special RM500 financial aid for over 14,000 civil servants in Terengganu.
The relief funds were announced by the Prime Minister after his visit to the temporary evacuation centre, or PPS (Pusat Pemindahan Sementara) in Setiu, Terengganu.
The total losses incurred by the year-end flooding could approach RM1 billion, said the Prime Minister, adding that the authority is monitoring the flood situation in other states and that fund allocation follows needs.
Meanwhile, Pahang has become the latest state to be flooded due to Sungai Dong and Sungai Gali overflowing about the same time1. Local Malay and Chinese media reported that Raub district has established about 15 PPS to shelter roughly 452 evacuees from over 145 families. Raub disaster management committee noted that the registration of evacuees was still ongoing and the number of evacuees was still being updated.
Perak has not reported new flood evacuees. The number of evacuees was last reported as 20 unchanged since Nov 26.
Nationwide, total number of evacuees amounted to 153,341 as at 12:00pm Dec 1, compared to 152,341 as at 6:00am2. As of 12:00pm, a total of three flood victims lost their lives, two from Kelantan and one from Terengganu.
